Role of Surya in Astrology

Surya Dev is chief Giver of Jyotish Shastra. Surya indicates sacred fire. SamayVidya ( Astrology) has been revered and recognized as the glistening eye of the Veda Purusha

As per Brihat Jataka :-

यच्छास्त्रं सविता चकार विपुलं स्कन्धैस्त्रिभिर्योतिष तस्योच्छित्ति भयात् पुनः कलियुगे संसृत्य यो भूतलम् ।

भूय: स्वल्पतरं वराहमिहिरव्याजेन सर्वं व्यधा दित्थं यं प्रवदन्ति मोक्षकुशला स्तस्मै नमो भास्वते ।।

This means - "The three fold Jyotish was propounded by the Surya. Fearing that it would be lost in Kaliyuga the Surya took the incarnation in the world as Varahamihira and expounded the three branches in a short form. This is what people with knowledge of salvation say. Obeisance to that Surya".

This statement is fully justified by the fact that Varahamihira wrote monumental works on all the three branches - Siddhanta, Hora and Samhita. Hence He doesn't move at all and indicates consistency, structure, strategy, process and organization. The Surya Whirls day and night; He is the harbinger of the day who moves ahead quickly in a single wheeled chariot drawn by seven green imperishable horses. The single wheel of the solar Chariot is represented by Samvatsara (संवत्सर).

Purush Suktam speaks about the Surya Coming from the eyes and Chandra from the mind of the cosmic creator Shri Vishnu ( चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत ) hence the Surya is said to be the eyes of the Devtas and to be the animating soul of the moving and unmoving universe is held to be the soul of the world.

According to Rigveda vide :

चित्रं देवानामुद् गादनीकं चक्षुमित्रस्य वरुणस्याणने । आप्राढ्यवा पृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्चा॥

It means, the Surya is the supervisor of heavenly bodies, wind, vapours and fire or heat. He is present in heaven on the earth and space by his influences. When at the zenith, he cannot be seen. He is the soul. He is sentient and also inert. It only proves that the Surya is the king-pin of our solar system.

सूर्यः शौर्यमथेन्दुरुच्चपदवीं सन्मंगलं मंगलः सद्बुद्धिं च बुधो गुरुश्च गुरुतां शुक्र सुखं शं शनिः।

राहुर्बाहुबलं करोतु सततं केतुः कुलस्यो नतिं नित्यं प्रीतिकरा भवन्तु मम ते सर्वेऽनकूला ग्रहाः॥

Let Surya bestow Boldness, The Chandra high position and Kuja happiness; Buddha grants Prudence; Brihaspati endows Pride; Shukra who provides Comforts; Shani begets welfare; Rahu who imbues strength; Ketu confers progress of the family .
